About
The Full Story
I always wanted to bring HEMA to Salem, and when my regular fight group could no longer meet up, I knew it was time. I started a small fight group, and offered private lessons to build up the curriculum, and after a year of preparation, Seize The Vor opened its doors. We offer classes in Longsword, Messer, Ringen, Rondel, and Spear all in the style of the Medieval German Masters in the fellowship of Liechtenauer. We offer group classes for adults and children, summer camps, private lessons, seminars and team building events.

Seize the Vor Head Coach Moses Jones, has been studying the art of the blade for over 15 years. His journey began in classical fencing, but after he had an opportunity to train Longsword in Verona, Italy he was hooked on HEMA. When he moved back to his home in Oregon, he spent a combined 10 years studying KDF at Indes WMA under Brent Lambell and with the fight club Drei Wunder run by Stewart Sackett. This former college mathematics instructor makes good use of his curriculum development skills to offer programs in Ringen, Rondel, Messer, Longsword and Spear in the tradition Johannas Liechtenauer.
Moses lives with his very supportive wife Rossella, in Salem Oregon, along with his two sons and their two furry friends.

Rocco Jones
Coach Rocco Jones has studied both the Liechtenauer system and Firori in addition to classical fencing training. Rocco was born in Oregon, but is fluent in Italian. He is a former professional parkourist, having travelled the world in pursuit of huge jumps which included jumping a canal in Venice Italy. He also has a brown belt in shaolin kempo, and spends most of his free time in the gym lifting heavy things.

Coach Brent has been fascinated by swords since childhood, a love affair that culminated in 2006 when he began training in the Liechtenauer KdF tradition while studying medieval history at Portland State. In 2008, he formed Drei Wunder WMA with his training partners Stewart Sackett and Tom Richardson. In 2014, he opened his school, Indes WMA, and began teaching professionally while growing the Portland HEMA community. His school has since closed, but his system of training lives on at Seize the Vor and Indes Ferox Gladio.
Brent lives in Saint Helens with his beautiful wife Leann and their ill-behaved dogs.

Jim Emmons
Long a student of martial arts, Jim started with foil in high school and has studied modern, classical, and historical fencing since that time. Lucky to study under a master in the Radaellian lineage while in college, and under another trained according to the 1908 Règlement d'escrime, Jim's focus in sabre has been the development and spread of these traditions specifically and the history of sabre generally. Jim also researches and teaches smallsword and late-period rapier. He is a Prévôt d'Armes with Barbasetti Military Sabre (since 1895), Prague, Czechia, and holds an Oak rank with Storica Defensa, an organization dedicated to improving teaching within historical fencing.
The Capitale Escrime Historical Fencing (CEHF) wing at Seize the Vor focuses mainly on smallsword, but enjoys forays into late period, or what is sometimes termed "transitional rapier," as well, particularly the system as outlined by Charles Besnard (1653). For more information, contact STV or check out Jim's website https://saladellatrespade.com/. For those interested in individual lessons, please contact Jim directly via his website's contact page.
